Isabela State University–Cauayan Campus and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Regional Office II joined forces to prepare third- and fourth-year students planning to work abroad through the Safe Migration and Overseas Employment Orientation held at the campus gymnaisum, September 10.

The joint activity equipped students with essential knowledge on pursuing overseas employment safely, helping them assess opportunities, understand their rights and responsibilities, and guard against illegal recruitment and trafficking in persons.

With many participants already considering careers beyond the Philippines, the orientation brought crucial migration information to students before they enter the workforce. It emphasized that preparation for overseas employment must begin well before recruitment, contract signing, and departure.

Labor and Employment Officer III Engr. Ron Oliver B. Tugade led the Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS), discussing key requirements and considerations for students seeking legitimate employment opportunities abroad. His session guided participants through the recruitment process and highlighted the importance of verifying employment offers before making commitments.

The orientation also tackled the threats that prospective migrant workers may encounter during the recruitment process. Atty. Jozele Mariz P. Dalupang-Tagaban, Attorney IV, discussed illegal recruitment and trafficking in persons, equipping students to recognize deceptive offers, scrutinize recruitment arrangements, and seek appropriate assistance when necessary.

The sessions shifted the students’ perspective of overseas employment beyond salary and career prospects, stressing the need to weigh legitimacy, safety, rights, and working conditions before pursuing an opportunity abroad.

Representing ISU-Cauayan Cluster Executive Officer Prof. Dr. Marisol S. Foronda, Prof. Dr. Liezl Joy L. Quilang, Director for Instruction, welcomed the participants and partners, emphasizing the campus’ role in preparing students for challenges they may encounter beyond the classroom.

Meanwhile, Dr. Laila A. Taguinod, OIC-Assistant Regional Director of DMW Regional Office II, delivered the message of Regional Director Atty. Rogelio T. Benitez, strengthening the importance of informed preparation in protecting Filipinos who aspire to work overseas.

The collaboration between ISU-Cauayan and DMW Region II brought government expertise directly to students who are beginning to map out their professional futures, strengthening their ability to distinguish legitimate opportunities from recruitment schemes that could expose them to exploitation.

The program concluded with a message from Prof. Dr. Jonathan Lord R. Aquino, Campus Director for Student Affairs and Services, highlighting the significance of carrying knowledge and vigilance alongside ambition.

Through the Safe Migration and Overseas Employment Orientation, ISU-Cauayan and DMW Region II reminded students that a successful overseas career begins not when they leave the country, but when they learn how to choose legitimate opportunities and protect themselves before they go.
