SAN FERNANDO CITY, LA UNION – The Isabela State University–Cauayan Faculty Association (ISUCauFA) successfully concluded its three-day Gender and Development (GAD) Seminar and team-building activity, held from July 1-3, 2025, at William’s Residence in Dalumpinas Oeste, San Fernando City, La Union. The event, themed “ISUCauFA, Strengthening Bonds through Better Communication,” aimed to enhance communication, promote equitable relationships, and cultivate a respectful, inclusive university environment in line with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 5 (Gender Equality).
The seminar, titled “Anger Issues: Implications, Manifestations, and Management Strategies,” provided faculty members with a much-needed respite from their demanding academic duties. It was specifically designed to bolster team rapport, foster collaboration, enhance faculty performance, and promote the holistic health and well-being of all participants, irrespective of gender identity.
Participants commenced their journey on July 1, 2025, departing by bus at 3:00 AM and arriving at the venue before 2:00 PM after an approximately twelve-hour travel period. Upon arrival, ISUCauFA Officers facilitated room assignments, emphasizing inclusivity and respect for personal boundaries to ensure a safe and valued environment for all. Due to adjustments in the resource speaker’s schedule, participants utilized the waiting period for rest and informal interactions.
The seminar officially commenced at 4:30 PM with an invocation led by Mr. Jestoni P. Castillo (ISUCauFA Auditor), followed by the singing of the National Anthem and ISU Hymn, conducted by Ms. Liezl P. Villaluz (School of Arts and Sciences Representative). Dr. Ronnie Boy V. Blas, ISUCauFA President, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the significance of GAD programs and team-building in fostering camaraderie and professional growth, and underscoring the importance of gender inclusivity in academic settings. Mr. Ronald B. Isidro, Jr., Vice-President of ISUCauFA, presented the seminar’s statement of purpose, reiterating the necessity of gender equality across all institutional initiatives.
Dr. Arnold T. Pascua, Campus Director for Planning and Development and GAD Focal Person, shared a reflective message using the fable “The Fox and The Sour Grapes,” which served to contextualize discussions on how societal expectations, particularly gender roles, influence emotional management and interpersonal dynamics.
Mr. Kevin L. Dela Calzada, the program facilitator, introduced the resource speaker, Ms. Aileen Kris S. Padilla, Guidance Counselor of Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center. Ms. Padilla delivered a comprehensive lecture on anger management, emphasizing how gendered norms and stereotypes impact the experience, expression, and coping mechanisms for anger. She encouraged participants to develop personally effective and gender-responsive strategies. An interactive open forum followed, allowing participants to share insights on gender’s influence on emotional expression and conflict resolution. A subsequent Gestalt Therapy activity prompted individual reflection on anger management, fostering empathy and inclusivity by considering diverse gender-specific challenges. Mr. Joshua B. Jimenez, ISUCauFA Business Manager, concluded the session, summarizing key takeaways and expressing gratitude, while stressing the importance of applying gender sensitivity and equitable communication in daily life. A sumptuous dinner provided further opportunity for discussion on integrating gender perspectives into workplace interactions.
The second day began with an inclusive stretching and Zumba session, followed by breakfast and leisure time at the beach. Despite initial inclement weather that suspended some outdoor activities, improved conditions allowed for group activities involving sand and water, designed to encourage participation and break down gender barriers. The day concluded with sunset photos, a group SWOT analysis activity applied to anger management (acknowledging gender influences), and a socialization session promoting deeper understanding.
Despite rain on the third day, the group departed from San Fernando City, La Union, equipped with new knowledge, strengthened bonds, and cherished memories. The successful conclusion of the event at Isabela State University–Cauayan Campus marked a significant step in empowering faculty with practical strategies for anger management, positive and inclusive communication, and the advancement of gender equity, contributing to both personal growth and the university’s mission the university’s mission.
